found through james carter, as we just explained to you who will be on the show a little bit later on the program. this get together in boca raton was of course $50,000 plate get together with the top donors, of course the very rich. here's what mitt romney said that began to get him in trouble. >> now, let's break this down. because he says, o look, 47% they don't even pay any income tax. it makes it sound like they don't pay taxes at all. let me show you who is in that 47% and.

are you stating that the military guys are victims, they feel a lot of people are receiving child tax benefits. if there they have no federal tax liability. the real number isn't 47% of the country. it's not like mitt romney made it out to be, 47% doing nothing but waiting for checks. even if you believe that character ayesration, it's only 7%,

and that's not what those people are doing either. here is a piece of what mitt romney said in that tape we just showed you. >> who believe that they're victims, and they are with the president. interesting. now look, a lot of people in that category are actually not paying any federal income tax because they got elderly tax benefits. they got the child tax credit, or they're working their working poor tax credit. who are receiving those programs? they're bipartisan. they were enthusiastically endorsed conservatives and republicans. here is ronald reagan. here's what he said.

>> huh interesting. seems like the big gripper was all for sure making sure that people in those brackets didn't pay taxes. who brought you that 47%? apparently your legendary ronald reagan. by the way who benefits from it? get a load of this map. the top ten states that benefit in other words do not pay those taxes because of these exemptions, etc. look at that, it looks like they're all red states from the south. i didn't see that coming. how about the people who benefit the least? look at that, mostly in the northeast, mostly blue states. so when you say that 47% the bums bums right? no they're your voters brought to you by programs by republicans like ronald reagan. a lot of people pay taxes any way. they're paying local tax sales tax, and they're paying the

payroll tax. in that group of 47% 61% of them pay a payroll tax. so they are, in fact, employed. they're not bums. they're not lazy. they're not looking for a government handout. they're paying a payroll tax because they have a job. if you include the employer side of the payroll tax and if the employer did not have to pay that side of the payroll tax he could give you more money and a higher salary. if you look at the payroll tax it's 15.23% of your income. i remember a guy who doesn't quite pay that much. anybody remember who that is? let's roll the videotape and find out. >> for the past ten years i never paid less than 13%. the most recent year is 13.6% something like that. i paid taxes every single year. >> interesting. so a payroll tax which he considers nothing at all is actually 15% when you take the

employee-employer side. mitt romney only pays 13% in taxes. who is the bum now? who is the guy who feels entitled now? in fact, here is another clip from that famous gathering in boca raton. >> i don't care about those guys. mitt romney goes on to say that he cares about independence and the middle class. that's interesting. who do you think is in the middle class let's find out. >> no one can say my plan is going to raise taxes on middle income people. principle number one is keep the burden down. >> is $100,000 middle income. >> no, middle income is $200,000 to $250,000 and less. >> wrong again. middle income is nowhere near $250,000. look at warped this guy's perception is. do you want to know what the actual median in this country

is? $50,054. that's four to five times less than what he thinks its is. he has the unmitigated gall to run. i don't care about the 47% of you. i only care about the middle class who makes $250,000. what percentage of americans are in that category only 4.2%. so mitt romney says he cares about the middle class. the middle class are people making over $200,000. forget the $250,000. we'll be fair to him. just take the $200,000 number. there's only 4.2% of the population among the people that he says he cares about. 4.3%. this guy is a caricature of a republican candidate. mr. money bags who has no ideas what you're going through in the country thinks that middle class is quarter of a million dollars in the year.

he said i'm representing the not only the top one percent but the top four percent. how is this guy going to win a goddamn things let alone president of america. when we come back i'll show you why this thing might be already over. had lead doesn't relinquish. this is a guy who had lead and is absolutely blossoming in the swing states, president obama and then add to it this epic disaster. he's not going to recover from this. i think he might need a miracle and a game changer. >> he certainly needs a game changer. he's going to need something to happen that none of us know about right now and that's going to have to happen to president obama. it's going to have to happen, you know, in horrible ways. i still think that even in those cases, the president gets rallied behind. i don't see how it's going to work out for him. >> he tried to rescue it last night. let's take a quick look at that and we'll talk about whether it helped it or not. >> it's not eloquently stated. i'm speaking off the cuff in response to a question and i'm sure i could state it more clearly in a more effective way than i did in a setting like that and so i'll -- i'm sure i'll point that out as time goes on. >> did that help at all?

in the straits president obama is pulling, sherrod brown pulling up the polling is up. everything is going with president obama. mitt romney is a drag on his ticket. >> the most telling part is jim demint saying give up on mom knee don't worry about the president, we've got to save the senate dog. i'm predicting, karl rove, the koch brothers will start shifting the money from the presidential race which they are going to realize is a loft cause soon into the senate and house races. that move is going to be eminent and jim deminute is signaling that. i want to do a really quick if i were romney, i do this if i were president obama if i were romney what would i do to rescue the situation. here, pack up and go home, son.

neil, and, you know, i'm -- i'm not too concerned about the source. look, this is a message i'm carrying day in and day out and will carry over the coming months, which is this is a decision about the course of america. >> god this guy's an unbelievable character darkly lit in the background. he looks like a villain out of a spiderman movie like he's going to go put on a suit and go destroy a bus or something. bring some lighting in, do something. this is a horrible campaign. the guy who hurt him was james carter iv. he's the grandson of jimmy carter and is on young turks right now. originally, you're the one who found the tapes. where did you find it, what did you do next, et cetera? >> well, i do regular searches on you tube and other video sites just to make sure that i keep up with everything that's

being uploaded, and i use generic search terms like republican or romney and things like that and this was just in one of those searches, a clip from the fundraiser came up. >> now you find a clip, that's understandable, although it's amazing that it didn't get more attention before. bless your heart for doing the research and finding it. what happens next. how do you get it to be so well known throughout the country here? >> well that part is a little bit of a mystery to me, too. this is a little bit unexpected. the original clip that i found was about a chinese factory that romney visited during his bain capital days. i had worked with david corn at mother jones about global tech which is a company that had factories in china that matched the description and fit in the time table so the subject

matter fit in with something i'd been working on to begin with, and that probably at the beginning is with a pushed me to pursue it, more than maybe others would have. >> all right. now, james, you know, they keep hitting your grandfather. they compare president -- oh, he's like president carter. that's supposed to be an insult. how do you feel about that? >> well, at this point, in my life i've got pretty thick skin. i can't say that it's the first time that anybody has said anything bad about my grandfather, although it's the first time that i've been old enough to understand it, and at this national level. i was too young in 1980 and 1984 where i assume this came up a lot. i'm old enough now and this is a little bit on a bigger scale than what i'm used to in that respect. >> is this a little bit of redemption? >> oh, yeah, i think so.

a lot of my supporters and my friends on twitter have actually been saying that this is poetic justice for, you know, that it was a carter that found this video that's giving the romney campaign so much trouble a understand i agree with that. >> well, there was an email obtained by associated press from your grandfather to you saying james this is extraordinary, congratulations. papa. how did that make you feel? >> man that's -- that's great. he's always very supportive, but i don't think he's ever emailed me the word extraordinary before and so i'm pretty proud of that. >> next time one of the conservative comes on and says jimmy carter is like this or that you wanted to go out there

and be like what now? >> well, it wasn't my original motivation but it's definitely added to the satisfaction of this moment. >> all right. by the way your grandfather not only was an incredibly decent man who was president and we can defend his record back and forth and i've interviewed him a couple of times, also helping to wipe out one of the most important diseases in the world. it's great to see somebody in the carter family sticking up for him. >> that's right. i'm glad to be the one doing it this time. >> james carter, iv, thanks for joining us on the young turks. >> thank you. >> look for more videos. look through some young turks videos and see what you get. now let's talk about the guy who put together the fundraiser, mark leader. turns out he's in the private

equity world too. mitt romney got him into the private equity world. he doubled his money in one thing and was decides pointed. leader turns around later and goes they are making 100% profit and they're disappointed, i got to get into this business. he's got $8 billion in equity now at sun capital which he runs. here's the downside, since 2008, 25% of its companies 20% of them went bankrupt. oops. they filed for bankruptcy, but in private equity, they get rich either way. you drive them into bankruptcy, who cares. one of the companies was one of my favorites friendly's. >> the restaurant shut down 63 locations along the east coast including five in western mass after filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy. >> that was from wwlp.

what made me angry about that is when you read into the details it turns out the reason they drove friendly's into bankruptcy is they didn't want to pay the pensions of the employees. you're making $8 billion and you're worrying about these pensions by making an extra buck that those serving us jim dandy's all their lives don't get pensions? it's guys like romney and leader who say i'm going to crush whoever's in my path to make an extra nickel. here's the stats. he's worth an estimated $400 million now, that was before his 2009 divorce. 15,000 square foot mansion near boca raton florida where they held the fundraiser. he has a ski house in vermont i do declare. he rented out a house in bridge

hampton for $500,000 a month. $500,000 a month! that's two middle class people in the country. god, they got so much money! but no, you guys serving ice cream, you don't get your pensions, ha ha, drove you into bankruptcy to make an extra buck. >> turns out he's been having sex parties. depends on how you feel about that. here's the new york post in 2011: >> that's amazing. it sounds just like it did right before we crashed into the great depression. these guys, same things over and over the only thing different was russian women. i like how specific it was.

this fool has got a picture saying i have three women in favor of me, including my research person. oops. i suspect they were so desperate to find women that they had to borrow one of ours. todd akin, what would that be? i believe that would be a fail. all right man, this guy's a disaster. it's ok. his campaign contacted us and they have decided that they are also going to hide the identity of this next pepper that we are going to interview here on the young turks. they have a woman here with the akin campaign. now, i got to ask you we're protecting our identity, et cetera, but how do you feel about the views of akin on abortion? >> well, you know, one thing you are not understanding is us women really love to have our

uteruses controlled by older men. i love that he wants to take away our reproductive rights. >> it seems straightly strange that your mouth is not using. how do you feel you are not getting equal pay for the exact same jobs as men. >> women shouldn't get actual pay. they are not as intelligent or productive as men. akin is right on the money when it comes to his denial of equal pay. >> this seems a little fishy here. are you even sure you're a woman? >> yes. >> really, why don't you come out and leme see you if you really are a woman? >> why would you ask that? >> oops. by the way, they would actually do that. what what, what do you mean? what's the problem. all right there's some chance that was jared jackson and the voice of anna.

>> the man who broke the story james, great to have you here. >> thanks, chenk. >> tell us what's happening in utah when its capabilities are first. >> this would be an enormous center to store all the surveillance all the eavesdropping on email telephone calls tweets, searches of google searches, internet searches, that type of thing and the amount of space will be about the same floor space as the empire state building. if you can imagine the empire state building filled with surveillance information actually information on little disks, basically information on data that will or data that's basically more than anybody else can imagine in this country.

never has there been a center this big. >> now if they were going to collect data on al-qaeda and say we have probable cause this guy is part of al-qaeda, all americans would say of course, you should do that, there's no question. i'm not sure they need a place that large for al-qaeda surveillance. that's what's got people worried. we asked the nsa today and they responded back saying: >> is that true or untrue? >> one of the people i interviewed was phillip benty. he worked at n.s.a. or 40 years a very high ranking most senior people at n.s.a. he virtually designed the entire system for eavesdropping overseas on foreign communications. he told me that they're basically using that same system turned it internally on the united states, which is why he left the agency in disgust

after almost 40 years. one of the scary things is that romney his campaign, top intelligence advisor is general michael hey den the same person who instituted the warrantless eavesdropping program under the bush administration, so you've got not only with one of the top presidential candidates, you've the person who initiated the warrantless eavesdropping program and now they've got an enormous data center to put it all. >> if they're allowed to wiretap without warrants, doesn't that give them the capability without going to a court to say hey, you know what, we decided amongst ourselves that we can wiretap anybody we like, even u.s. citizens. >> that's the problem. there's one protection created the foreign intelligence

surveillance court and they were supposed to have the last say on whether an american can be overs dropped on and under the bush administration, on a program that was agreed to by president obama, they pretty much neutered the foreign intelligence surveillance court so now those protection have been watered down and they're very weak. they release no information about what they do. it's a giant black hole, everything goes in and nothing goes out. >> could they look at the emails we're reading and look at the phone calls we're making on our cell phone or what we're searching on line? >> well, sure they could. that's what the -- that's one of the reasons phil resigned. he told me with this system, the united states was that far away, he held his fingers up about an inch apart from a total -- from a totalitarian turnkey state. the system is there for anybody

that wants to to turn the key and turn this into basically a totalitarian state. under the bush administration, it was done secretly. it was only stopped when "the new york times" discovered it and reported it. >> as i look at this story i think look, a guy sitting in the middle of missouri says i'm a plumber, they can eavesdrop on me, i got nothing to do with al-qaeda, i don't really care. number one it's a huge constitutional problem start with al-qaeda, then truly dealers, then drug users then 50% of the country. the fact that this center is so large and equipped says to me they want to collect everybody's information includion the plumber in missouri just in case. >> well, you can see all the mistakes they make just on the no fly list. they have all these people on there that have never done anything. all these mistakes.
